{a day in the life} on rachel cooks

I’m pulling back the curtain today. And if you’re anything like me, you love getting the scoop, however dull, on just about anyone. It’s not that I’m gossipy or superficial (at least I try not to be) its just that people fascinate me. I love seeing how others work, live and play. To find out what makes them tick. Because more often than not, I usually can find out a little something that we have in common, as well as some very fun differences.

I like that about people – the common and the unique.

So, today in the spirit of sharing, I’m visiting over on Rachel Cooks because the lovely Rachel was kind enough to feature me in her awesome series: A Day in the Life. It’s such a brilliant series and I have found out many fun facts about some of my favorite bloggers, as well as found some new favorites to follow.

To go along with my interview: A Day in the Life – Jelly Toast, I thought I would share a few ‘behind the scenes photos’ of my kitchen. Now, these photos can be found in the interview as well, but I figured I would give you a little tour.

Follow me –

My husband bought our house nine years ago, right after we got engaged, and I moved in a year later, right after we got married. So he’s been here nine years, and I’ve been here eight. I must not forget to mention that we only intended on staying in our house for about three years. As you know, life doesn’t always go according to plan and here we are 8 (9) years later, still pretty darn happy in our home.

When we moved into the house, the kitchen looked quite different. Imagine cornflower blue counter tops and carpet as well as old appliances and no fridge. We quickly adiosed the carpet, but weren’t in a place to change the counter tops. I also bought the only fridge I could afford on my 22-year-old-photo-lab-tech-turned-student-teacher salary, because I wanted desperately to contribute something to our future home. And while it’s been a fine fridge, it has it’s quirks – a few of which are it’s tiny size and it’s love of freezing anything that gets pushed too far back on the shelves. I’ve lost countless heads of lettuce in this fridge.

Luckily tomorrow, our new fridge will arrive and that will all change! (big time happy dance) And this is where I desperately want to push someone into the side of my fridge and demand they give me $400, but my fridge isn’t actually broken, so I don’t think it will work. So I’ll let it go. But you guys know…oh, you know. Which leads me to a Ross quote. Is it a problem that I perpetually think in Friends references? By the way – Cereal Mag on Instagram totally gets me.

Anyway, after deciding to stay longer than we originally planned, we made some more changes that in turn, made our kitchen feel more like us – counter tops, appliances, new hardware on the cabinets. Do I have dreams of a huge, gourmet kitchen with the works? Of course, who doesn’t? Plus, have you checked out my kitchen Pinterest board?

But honestly, I’m very content here in our kitchen and our home. It’s got beautiful light, a ton of cabinets (although, I never have a problem filling them up) and appliances that I love and got to pick out my very self. It is also the place where we gather to eat our family dinners – around our table my husband has had since college.

But that’s neither here nor there, and when the kiddos grow out of their we-get-markers-and-glue-and-paint-on-everything stage, we’ll get a new table. For now, this one works perfectly.

So, there it is – my kitchen 🙂

Now I’m dying to know – what is your favorite part of your kitchen?

Happy Tuesday!!

  1. I want that menu chalkboard! Love it! And I am a new visitor to your blog – very neat!

  2. Thanks again for taking the time to do this! Loved learning more about you 🙂

  3. Loved the interview over at Rachel Cooks. I too spend most of my day in the kitchen. There always seems to be something to get done in there. Kitchen are the homiest place in the house. I love when visitors stop by and everyone pulls a chair up to the table and just hangs out. I think your kitchen is fabulous – great light and everything.

    • Thanks, Mary! It’s so true. It doesn’t matter how much I clean up the rest of my house and get things ready for visitors and guests, we always end up in the kitchen. And honestly, I love that! Thanks so much for stopping by, Mary!

  4. beautiful kitchen! loved your interview on rachel cooks. so fun to see a blogger from NW ohio! my husband’s family is in toledo (specifically northwood/sylvania) so we’re in the area alot. 🙂

    • Thank you, Sarah! What a small world! I always say Toledo is like the biggest small town. It’s crazy how you can go pretty much anywhere here and find someone you know – or at least someone who knows someone you know 😉 Thanks so much for stopping by!
